The poems were frequently accompanied by colourful drawings depicting scenes from the afterlife and ceremonies conducted by the deceased.

The contents of the Book of the Dead differed based on the person and their social standing. However, certain basic features were discovered in almost all versions of the book. Spells and incantations to protect the departed from bad spirits, advice on how to navigate the treacherous voyage through the underworld, and prayers to various gods and goddesses for assistance and favour were all included.

The Book of the Dead emphasised the necessity of mummification and provided full instructions on the rites and spells involved in the process. It also contained charms to ensure that the deceased's heart would be measured against the feather of truth in the Hall of Ma'at.
