Description
-
The sculptor used the bichrome quality of the stone to highlight the separation between the statue's face and head. The dorsal pillar is inscribed with vertical registers of hieroglyphs, which give the king's name and titles as well as a portion of a dedication to Amun-Ra. In 1817, it was noted that there were traces of colour on the statue, suggesting that it may have been painted red in antiquity. The monumental statue of Ramses II is made of pink or grey granite. It is one of a pair placed in front of the Ramesseum.
